Please play, The Music Experience

Please Play Nowadays we are experiencing a process of interculturality generated by the many social changes of recent decades. These intercultural relations are establishing a relationship based on respect towards diversity and mutual enrichment. One of the most interesting means of promoting this type of relationship is music as it allows and favours exchange whilst offering the possibility to appreciate other cultures. This exhibition is created with the idea of favouring this interculturality in a natural, spontaneous and intuitive manner.

This precise moment in time, with new technologies in constant development, helps to establish a more novel, suggestive, experimental, and expository discourse focusing on musical themes which will attract more people.

We have put into practice all our previous experience gained in the designing of projects and the Interactive Musuem of Music to prepare our star exhibition “Please Play, The music experience”. The exhibits have been carefully designed to offer the visitor a cultural, didactic and at the same time entertaining experience while urging him/her to interact with the contents.

Please PlayWith this exhibition we propose to create a space where it is possible to interact with music, provoking a unique experience, suiting each person´s creativity. The visitor will be able to form their own musical journey by using concepts related to music such as science, technology, art, language, and folklore.

During this journey visitors will be accompanied by virtual teachers who will explain, and encourage them to use the different elements of the exhibition.

Spaces

Please Play. The Music Experience has more than 30 mechanical modules and multimedia exhibits placed around 6 theme areas. The exhibition is aimed at 7-14 years old and their families with plenty of activities to keep both younger and older visitors entertained (learnotainment).

The sound tunnel
To start the itinerary, the visitor enters a tunnel of soundscapes, formed by those daily sounds which surround us. We have to take into account that sound is movement and that without movement there is no sound. Our daily lives are invaded by with sounds... the world is sound.

Music in Action
This space has 10 laser sensors which activate 10 musical instruments. These instruments all play the same melody.Visitors can interact with the instruments creating an orchestra. The melodies represent different styles of music so that the visitors can play with the fusion of instruments and genres. These facilities are accompanied by a projection which gives information about the instruments and music genres being played.

Expository/explanatory modules
These five modules will contain a representative selection of musical instruments from all over the world, with a presentation of the materials that nature offers us and which are frequently used in the contruction of musical instruments.

Beside these cabinets 5 screens, a tactile screens and informative panels will introduce us into the music and its most important concepts which will help us to investigate later on. In this space the visitor will have the chance to experiment with music by means of 2 multitouch surfaces which will both surprise, and encourage the visitor to interact.

Please play
Music has to be felt, lived and experienced. The visitor will now enter the heart of the exhibition, an “Please Play” area in which he or she will have the opportunity to experiment by touching and playing up to 12 sound facilities formed by experimental sound modules and musical instuments, acoompanied by virtual guides.

Recording/filming set
One of the important parts of music is the dance which accompanies it. Ever since Prehistory, the human being has considered movement and sound as symbols of life, in contrast to quietness and silence, which represent death. Ever since the beginning of the history of humankind, dance and music along with rhythm, have been associated. In an exhibition about music, we cannot forget about dance and traditional dances, as in many cases, like Flamenco for instance, they form a whole and it is difficult to show the nature and spirit of a certain type of music without mentioning the dance that goes along with it. A dancing area has been designed for this space which has a virtual teacher and a recording/Filming set so that the visitor can continue participating in the exhibition on the Internet.

Educational Area
The exhibition has a strong didactic nature, both for children and for adults. With the youngest in mind, an area for school children and families with little children has been designed. In this educational area specialised monitors and assistant teachers will offer workshops and musical storytelling activities, all designed with the participant´s interaction in mind.
